Jorge Sampaio, president of the awards jury and former president of Portugal, described Thunberg as "one of the most notable figures of our day" for hisability to mobilize younger generations in actions to combat climate change.

It is gratifying and very inspiring to see that a 17-year-old girl managed to spark such an important debate and, a protest that started alone, practically succeededmobilize millions of people in around the world and attract the attention of world leaders.

This shows the need for everyone to do their part and that, asan ant job, one encourages and motivates the other and change, in the end, can be huge and really be the difference between what you do and what you hope will happen.
