Agroecology as a revolutionary practice

After several decades of work dedicated to studying the social, environmental and energy costs of the green revolution, teacher Walter Alberto Pengue affirms that agroecology is a practice of emancipation inscribed in the dynamics of resistance of the peoples of the world to capitalism.

Agroecology is eminently revolutionary, because it seeks to stop urbanization processes worldwide, whose forecasts for 2050 by multilateral organizations point to the disappearance of rural communities throughout the planet. Returning to the countryside, staying in the countryside, recovering food sovereignty from the hegemonic agri-food system, therefore, is a revolutionary act.

This resistance, however, is constantly being threatened, not only by the persecution carried out by governments through their legislation and other actions. Teacher Walter Pengue cautions that the scaling of agroecology globally has not gone unnoticed by corporate groups. They are currently trying to co-opt it through the idea that agroecology can improve productivity, depriving agroecology of its integral character.

The scaling up of agroecology must take into account all its balances, access to land, access to water, control of seeds, food sovereignty, agrarian reform.
