Coton de Tulear: a small, soft and friendly companion dog comes from Madagascar, even if a bit bully at times. It is a breed that bears the name of the Malagasy port of Tuléar and is almost completely unknown in Western countries where only a few years ago it began to capture the interests of breeders and enthusiasts. It has recently been bred in Italy as well. To import it to our continent was France, thanks to its special relationship with Madagascar: so the Coton de Tuléar from beyond the Alps he arrived "at a trot" here too. Let's get to know him.
Coton de Tulear: origins
After having lived for many centuries on the African island of Madagascar, the Coton de Tuléar it arrived in France in 1977, only after having inherited from the ancient "Barbichons" the great passion for water. This breed derives from the crossing of Bichon, arrived in Madagascar together with the traders who boarded them to hunt mice, with native dogs of the island. In the selection of the breed, the experts hypothesize that the Bedlingtown Terrier, hence the convex spine, and the bow tie, which is the cause of the spots on the white coat.
Coton de Tuléar: appearance
The small size and the long, soft coat make the Coton de Tulear a very special companion dog and in demand more and more. The coat looks like cotton, has round, dark, expressive and intelligent eyes and the general appearance is that of a small but very well built dog with the right proportions between trunk, limbs and head.
Small in the case of the Coton de Tuléar it means between 25 and 32 cm as a height at the withers for males, and a weight between 4 and 6 kg, females even between 3.5 and 5 kg. The sympathetic muzzle has a little accentuated stop, the nose small and black, even if the dark tobacco color is tolerated, and large and decadent ears appear, even about long, thin and triangular. The preferred gait of this dog is the trot, punctuated by the low attacked thing, about 18 cm long, thick at the root.
The special cloak of the Coton de Tuléar it is long, thick and slightly wavy: as the name suggests, it looks just like cotton. It does not change, but requires constant care to avoid the formation of knots and felting. White is the essential color, sometimes with slight yellow / gray shades, on the ears. The standard also includes more or less accentuated tan markings, even on the body: a little tolerance, then they often disappear with growth.
Coton de Tuléar: character
Small but full of joy, the Coton de Tulear he is jovial and puts a good mood even if at times he is a bit turbulent, at others he wants to be the protagonist and a bit of a clown. In his emotional sphere, however, he is a serious dog who becomes fond of his master and stays close to him affectionately. This makes it an ideal companion dog, perfect for many families, whether living indoors or in an apartment.
He has a strong temperament, he is not a good-natured but gives many satisfactions more satisfactions than the disagreements that can be created when he does his own thing. Even with his peers, as well as with children, he is adorable if he is of the same breed, but if he meets unknown and larger dogs he is a bit of a bully. He doesn't like being at home alone, beyond two or three hours for the Coton de Tuléar it is a drama, he hates scampering through deserted rooms waiting to hear the door open and see you appear.
Coton de Tuléar: farms
For now the Coton de Tulearit is not very popular, I say for now because you will agree with me: it has all the credentials to become popular in the homes of many Italians. The Italian farms reported on the ENCI website are 4, one in Lombardy, near Milan, one in the Marche, near Macerata, one in Piedmont, in the province of Alessandria, and then in Umbria, near Perugia.
Coton de Tuléar: price
The average price of a puppy specimen of Coton de Tulearhovers around the 800-1000 euros. It may vary if it becomes better known and more bred, but it is not an out of the ordinary price if you consider its peers, very small dogs like him.
