How to wash your hands, how not to do it, more than anything else, given that today it is the simplest and most effective way to protect our health, and also that of those around us. It is a rather banal but essential gesture, the most suitable and effective, I would say, to prevent the transmission of infections.

How to wash your hands correctly it is not at all difficult to learn but let's not underestimate the question. It takes little, a distraction or a neglected passage, to compromise the effectiveness of this excellent habit.
It is important to wash your hands before and after being in very busy environments, but not only that, there are many other less obvious occasions in which, those in a hurry or out of laziness, do not. Or not as carefully as it should be.

Washing your hands well is important

Without panicking, but we see every day that they are surrounded by germs: they move easily through water, objects, living beings and dust particles and as soon as they find an ideal environment they not only settle there but also multiply, very quickly. Hands are an ideal environment to come into contact with objects, animals and foods that full of microorganisms, among these not all are "bad", indeed, for the most part they are harmless. Some, however, prove to be pathogenic and can lead, for example, to cholera, ascaridiasis, salmonellosis and hepatitis A.

This in countries where there is poor general and personal hygiene, in our part of our country we can consider ourselves lucky and limit ourselves to fear diseases such as colds, toxoplasmosis, conjunctivitis, pinworms or very common intestinal influences. Not very pleasant, of course, but much less serious.

Washing your hands well is therefore important because the outermost cells of the epidermis are colonized by bacteria and fungi that form a bacterial flora that must be eliminated. It is the first and essential gesture to break down the risk of infections.

How to wash your hands well

Let's forget about the quick rinse, let's learn how to wash your hands seriously, without wasting time but not even the opportunity to protect ourselves with a trivial gesture. First of all, to increase the effectiveness of the washing, let's remove rings, bracelets and the like: they only increase the number of microorganisms present.

To begin to understand how to wash your hands we use preferably lukewarm if not hot water and a good soap, carefully wet the whole hands by pushing on the wrists, passing over the palms and back, between the fingers, under the nails. With soap you need to scrub all these surfaces thoroughly and then rinse thoroughly.

To dry your hands, a special disposable paper must be used, or a clean towel that has not passed through who knows what other people's hands, otherwise we are all over again. In public restrooms we find various types of hot air devices, but they are fine. A trick, especially if we are not at home and there is the "old-fashioned" tap with knobs: hands must be protected with disposable paper when, as soon as they are cleaned, we use them to turn off the water.

If we want to avoid annoying irritations, or we feel that the detergent used is particularly aggressive, nothing prevents us from passing moisturizer after washing, but it is an optional manual step on how to wash your hands.

Wash your hands: how long does it take

There is no precise time to time, in order to be sure to show that you know how to wash your hands, but some cleaning phases have recommended times. For example when, with soap, we rub our hands together, wrists and nails included, it must last at least 20 seconds: it seems little but you will see that compared to the average that you see around, it is a lot! Also there drying phase it takes its time: at least the same, but to avoid cracking even 30-40 seconds we can give it to ourselves. It also depends on the material we are using, whether paper or towel.

In addition to the duration, and at chow to wash your hands, it is also necessary to specify the when. It should be intuitive but it isn't always. A few tips: before handling food, touching a wound, applying or removing contact lenses. And also after going to the toilet, after eating raw food, especially meat or fish, after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. And again if you touch animals, waste, people, diapers, various objects. More trivially after a trip on the subway after being attached to any of the grip surfaces.
