Pirelli presented a few hours ago to representatives of the press and industry media, including our website Our website, its achievements and upcoming goals in the field of environmental sustainability.

The impression I got is of a important commitment and especially concrete, founded on facts and on numbers and not only on words, as unfortunately often happens in other realities.

In this article, it would be impossible to tell you about all the projects started in depth, but I will try to offer you an overview of some of the key points of the commitment of Pirelli under the sustainability.

Attention to sustainability starts at a very high strategic level, with one dedicated steering committee who reports directly to the CEO, who is responsible for directing and supervising all the group's activities in this area Corporate Sustainability.

Strategy design, Project implementation is Activity monitoring these are the three cornerstones on which the global and single country strategy is based.

There Carbon Footprint and the Water Footprint of the entire Pirelli Group are monitored from a long-term perspective and the improvement of the related indicators is one of the objectives included in the evaluation of management performance.

THE main results achieved in 2015 with the Pirelli's sustainability strategy They were:

  • reduction of the specific withdrawal of water necessary in the various stages of production
  • increase in the rate of waste recovery
  • increase beyond the target of the industrial plan of training days for employees
  • new partnerships with strategic suppliers of natural rubber to protect biodiversity
  • revenue growth from products Green Performance, an entire line of tires of the group where the focus is on increasing durability, reducing CO2 emissions, reducing noise and reducing fuel consumed.

Let's see them in detail:

  • In 2015 Pirelli recorded an absolute withdrawal of water of just over 11 million cubic meters, with one reduction of the specific levy of 3% compared to 2014 and 42% compared to 2009. Thanks to the commitment of all production sites in the world, a total of 30 million cubic meters of water have been saved since 2009.
  • The waste recovery rate in 2015 rose to 91%, with an increase of 18% compared to 2009 and 1% compared to 2014.
  • there staff training, which in 2015 saw an increase in the number of average training days per capita a 8.3 days, compared to 8.2 days in 2014 and 7.2 in 2013. A figure that, for the third consecutive year, exceeds the target of 7 average days per capita indicated in the business plan for the year 2015.
  • In 2015 Pirelli signed new important agreements to promote the sustainable and at the same time quality production of trees from which rubber is made. In collaboration withKirana Megatara, has launched a program to explain to Indonesia's producing communities how maximize product quality and then the economic performance of the product, in a long-term perspective. To this was added an action of social support for communities, with scholarships for the children of producers and other social, cultural and educational initiatives
  • In 2015, in particular, almost the half (48% compared to 46% recorded in 2014) of Pirelli tire revenues is derived from Green Performance products, an almost double level compared to 2009, when it was 25%, and higher than the target of the 2013-2017 sustainability plan which aimed to reach this value only at the end of 2017.

Pirelli's 2015 results in the area of environmental sustainability

The efforts of Pirelli are continuing throughout 2016 and the objectives set for the next 4 years are decidedly challenging, in particular with regard to the increase in the share of revenues from Green Performance products and in relation to the target of percentage reduction in tire rolling.

In fact, from all the studies carried out it emerged that the most critical phase from the point of view of environmental impact, throughout the life cycle of the tire, is that of use of the product, linked to the carbon dioxide emissions emitted by vehicles.

Being able to reduce the rolling resistance of tires therefore becomes of paramount importance to reduce fuel consumption and consequently CO2 emissions, as well as achieving the goal of saving the end consumer.

In this table you can see theenvironmental footprint of each stage of the tire life cycle:

The use of new technologies with beneficial impacts on the environment will be another keystone of Pirelli's strategy in the coming years, such as the one that allows to produce silica (material that can replace rubber) from rice husk, a plant capable of growing even in desert areas or even the extension of technology Cyber Tire to car tires. With this incredible technology, a sensor, inserted into the inner surface of the tire, interprets the information based on the variation of friction and forces on the ground, processes it and transmits it to the on-board computer and to all safety systems.

Here is a summary of some of the main goals of Pirelli for the 2020 in the area of sustainability:

I really think that for once we can be proud of how an Italian company, which has become a multinational, is very clear that in corporate strategies, environmental sustainability is no longer just a marginal objective but part of the strategy to make the core business grow and prosper!
