Watly: a 15-ton, solar-powered idea that brings drinking water, energy and connectivity to developing countries. It's about a Italian-Spanish startup, with one foot in Udine and one in Barcelona, but with thoughts in Ghana and in all those areas where it is missing water, energy and internet coverage via WiFi.
Until the creators of Watly, Marco Attesani, Stefano Buiani and Matteo Squizzato, as if nothing had happened or almost, the world continued to turn with the absurd situation in which one billion inhabitants of a planet made up of about 70% of water, ours, does not have access to drinking water. These are recent data from World Health Organization which also counted two billion without electricity and five billion without internet connection.
Taking the matter head on, Watly has declared war on pollution and instead of filling her mouth with so many promises she has rolled up her sleeves and is cleaning up the salty and contaminated water ready to make a peaceful, fluid, energetic revolution, a bit even 2.0 with a device that purifies until 3 million liters of water per year and it works ad solar power also giving Internet coverage via Wi-Fi.
Watly: what is it
Watly is the first computer in the world capable of desalinating and purifying the water, generate electricity and allow Internet connectivity everywhere, it runs on solar energy, is 40 meters long and weighs 15 tons. It is not at all "picky" because it cleans the water of any source of contamination, moreover Watly it maintains itself, self-generating the energy it needs to function.
Every day there are 5 thousand liters of water Watly purifies 150 kWh of energy that it ensures thanks to the action of 80 photovoltaic panels. Looking at his performance over a fifteen-year cycle, counting only one Watly active isolated, it will avoid up to 2,500 tons of greenhouse gas emissions, generating 1GWh of clean electricity. For free.
At the base of these numbers that are almost difficult to imagine, there is no magic and not even a promise of a charmer of crowds, there are young people who "have studied it" identifying for their project the most effective and powerful method of purification and desalination , exploiting the physical principle of steam compression distillation. In this way Watly proved capable of eliminate all pathogens and microorganisms including viruses, bacteria, parasites, fungi or cysts, and it doesn't stop with these enemies.
It is also able to deal with inorganic compounds, removing them. It is therefore understood that poisons such as arsenic, benzene, heavy metals (such as lead), chlorine, chloramines, and radionuclides disappear from the water "treated" with Watly that does not stop even in front of radioactive water without requiring membranes or filter replacements.
As mentioned, Watly in addition to doing a lot, for those in need, it does it by itself: it generates the energy necessary to operate without asking anyone for anything, neither fuel nor connection to the electricity grid. It runs on solar energy, in fact, it exploits the heat of the sun collected by vacuum tubes, to act on the water, meanwhile i photovoltaic panels located in the center of the device, they generate off-grid electricity which, in addition to powering the internal electronics, can recharge smartphones, tablets or laptops. Or whatever external device you want to connect.
Watly: a bit of history
The first prototype of Watly, the seed of the revolution, dates back to 2013. Since then, the startup has won calls and prizes including victories at the Marzotto Prize and the European Pioneers, and European funds such as Horizon 2020, raising almost 2 million euros to develop a more advanced model.
Another important step is that in village of Abenta, in Ghana, where in 2015 it was installed Watly. Thanks to Indiegogo, a crowdfunding platform, is now raising the money necessary to develop a part of the machine and then return to the site, in Ghana, and install a new version that can provide drinking water and energy to over 3 thousand people.
Watly: the future
So far we have talked about Watly like a virtuous "single" with a good heart. Nothing against the status of single, in general, but in the case of this device, which aims at the revolution, we know that the idea is valid "Unity is strength". Startuppers know this well and aim to connect multiple units, in a kind of Energy_net, a smart-grid that has “nodes” scattered all over the world.
The knots would be thermodynamic computers connected to the web and other Watlys or its like, united with each other, but also in dialogue with what manages water resources and electricity generation from area to area. An interesting goal, very green, completely shared and daring. But immediately rewarded by an enthusiastic response and not only on the part of the planet where a sustainable heart already beats.
Speaking of "knots around the world", in fact, Watly has already made half the planet fall in love, has received requests from Africa, the USA, Australia and even the Saudi royal family, has contacts with Nigeria, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Sudan on the one hand, with the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Saudi Arabia on the other.
Watly: videos and insights
Such a brilliant idea that you want to know whoever had it and shake their hand. Not everything is doable right away, but here's a video to hear from the voice of its creators, the wonders of little big Watly.
