Domestic geese, not really apartment pets but if we live in the green, they can also become part of our extended family unit. They are often animals used as a symbol of stupidity, but they are not at all, indeed, and above all their history is intertwined with that of our ancestors for many centuries. They have been with us for a long time, they deserve more respect.

White domestic geese

The wild goose is the one from which thedomestic goose and it is for millennia that men have tamed this animal, from the documents it would seem that even the ancient Egyptians devoted themselves to this animal because of their meat and their eggs.

They are not always white domestic geese, depends on the breed we are considering, today there are about 100 divided according to size, in three categories: small, medium or large. They can also be divided into domestic geese from meat, feathers, liver and eggs, it depends what you want from this animal. Among the best known we find the Romagnola, the Cignoide, the Shetland, the Normandy goose, Pomerania, Alsace and Bourbonnais.

Domestic geese: eggs

Although domestic geese are in some cases raised for eggs, it must be admitted that the hatching them is not their vocation, in fact, a mother hen is often asked to do it in her place. The small-sized specimens are the most productive, in fact almost all "small" breeds in the "egg" category, the most bulky are dedicated to the production of meat and appreciated for the liver.

Beyond the size, becoming domesticated, geese are go from monogamy to polygamy, to be sure that they do not give hole, and leave us without eggs, it is necessary to take into account that there are one male for every 3 females. As for us, also for domestic geese the mating season comes with spring, the female lays three or four from which, after a month of hatching, the chicks come out, educated by both the mother and the father.

Domestic geese - they fly

More than flying, they flutter, pretending to rise a few centimeters from the ground, but compared to their ancestors, the domestic geese have undergone an intense phase of domestication which significantly burdened them. In the true sense of the word, a fact that also explains how theThe last thought of a domestic goose is to take flight.

It has some rounder and softer shapes, even near the belly it has a deposit of fat, called "baleen", which certainly helps it to soar in the sky but makes it very appreciated by those who will use it for cooking and for storing food.

Over time, the domestication of the goose has taken hold more and more, as it is an animal that does not require much care, therefore the breeds selected with severity, which we see today, are the ones that have won the productivity competition, certainly not the flight one.

Domestic geese: breeding

As mentioned, the domestic geese they are not demanding to raise, so we men immediately liked them: just feed them and keep them sheltered from the elements. There is no need to treat goose by goose, they are very well in groups also because in nature they were used to living in flocks and they are sociable animals. Of course, it's good to form groups that not only stick together but also make sense of our reproductive goals. For every four domestic geese, one must be male.

Once composed our people of geese, we have to prepare a place to let it settle: 150 square meters of pasture, a small house of about 4 square meters that serves as a refuge, all protected by a metal mesh at least half a meter high to avoid escapes.

It is useful to know that ducks less than two months old should not be purchased, because they still need their mother, and there are breeds that are more suitable than others, for example for eggs, such as Paduan or Leghorn which reach 300 eggs per year.

If instead we breed domestic geese for meat we must focus on other breeds and a particular treatment that allows them to gain weight properly, eating grass, forage maize, roots and feed. There are domestic geese also bred for their feathers and for the tanned leathers used to make duvets for the bed, pillows and jackets.

Domestic geese: what they eat

I'm definitely omnivorous even if their ancestors were not at all, they preferred grass, aquatic plants and small mollusks. However, since they started living alongside man, they eat leftovers from meals, although it would be better to continue to have lunch and dine with grass from the fields. What we can do, without harm, is to add to their diet a few grains of wheat or barley, but above all, never let them lack vegetables and fruit, in abundance and every day.

Domestic geese they love tubers and roots very much and it is important that they also take a certain amount of protein, by eating caterpillars and insects, or with our help. In fact, there are feeds designed to compensate for inadequate nutritional regimes that would compromise the health of our domestic geese.

Domestic geese: price

Much depends on the breed we are considering, but the price of these animals it varies between 50 and 100 euros. However, if you are really interested, it is good to inquire at the farms, however, specifying for what purpose we want a goose by our side.
