Magpie Pica Pica it is one of the most intelligent birds that exist today on the face of the Earth, and in the air. Indeed, even expanding the field, it excels, among all animals, also considering those with feet or belly, or paws on the ground. Widespread on the Eurasian continent, it is a bird that can be easily encountered even in the United States and in some areas of northern Africa. Staying in Italy, except that in Sardinia and on the Island of Elba, we can spot the Magpie Pica Pica without much effort. It prefers areas where there are meadows or orchards, bushes, cultivated fields and the edges of the woods are fine too, the important thing is that there is water nearby.

This songbird measures in length about 44-46 cm but most, over 50%, is tail, the body is therefore about twenty cm, maximum, net, much greater is the extent of its wingspan which goes from 52 to 62 cm. The color of the Magpie Pica Pica is glossy black, with metallic green and purple reflections, on the head, neck and chest, while the belly and back feathers are candidly white.

Always black with colored reflections they are both the wings, decorated with internal white feathers, the tail, the legs and the beak are also entirely black. If you see one Magpie Pica Pica with dull hair, either he is not well, or he is young. The little ones, in fact, already have the same colors as their parents but not the same lucidity in the plumage.

Magpie Pica Pica: feeding

One of the reasons why the Magpie Pica Pica is its ability to adapt to changes in food availability. She is certainly not fussy, moreover when she finds something to eat, she stocks up. In general he eats foods of both animal and vegetable origin then young birds, eggs, insects, scraps and carrion with a side dish of acorns and wheat.

When a Magpie Pica Pica must get food, certainly no problems if this involves having to come into contact with a human being, the same applies to other animals, indeed, to small groups of 3 or 4 specimens this bird also assumes "mocking" behaviors aimed at scaring off any predators or egg thieves.

Magpie Pica Pica: character

They live in small groups but during the season of love the various couples isolate themselves to build their own nest and to mate. Twelve months out of twelve, they have a strongly territorial behavior, they protect their territory, they defend it, and when they turn they always do so by looking "behind", attentive to sounds and presences, cautious and circumspect.

By moving the wings quickly, the Magpie Pica Pica it often croaks and hardly ever leans its tail, as if it didn't want to dirty it. He succeeds, even though it is almost longer than his own body. As mentioned initially, we are dealing with one of the smartest animals among those so far known to us: together with crows and others similar, among the birds the magpie is one of those with the more developed brain, in proportion to the body.

It has nothing to envy to a chimpanzee: it seems that these two animals, completely different in appearance and habits, have the same mental flexibility, itself ability to imagine, same social cognition and same reasoning ability.

Magpie Pica Domesticated Pica

We find the Magpie Pica Pica among the sedentary nesting species in Europe, in a part of Asia and in the north-western part of Africa and is so called because it is attracted to shiny objects. There are numerous subspecies, indeed, and each has been domesticated in a particular area.

For example in northwestern Africa there is the one with a blue spot around the eye and a non-shiny tail, in the Arabian peninsula there is another, smaller and with iridescent tones but without white feathers in the wings. The living magpies in Korea they are purple, with a short tail but longer than average wings.

Magpie Pica Pica: verso

One cannot speak of song, literally, for this songbird, but rather of verse. The sound it emits is not pleasant, it is harsh and at times threateningcertainly not as melodious as a Bengali song. In fact, it serves not to entertain us human beings, but rather to ward off intruders and defend the territory, to reaffirm its presence.
