TheWillowit is a fast growing plant that adapts to almost all types of soil (except arid ones). It does not fear pruning and its multiplication is easily done with the cutting technique.

The Willow it is widely cultivated both for its uses (willow for weaving, production of wicker, fences, supports, agricultural uses ...) and for its aesthetic value.

All sorts ofWillowthey need moisture and aerated soil. Unlike most of the plants that we are used to hosting in our garden, theWillowit does not fear water stagnation (it tolerates stagnant water even for long periods, but only when the soil is not too compact).

TheWillowgrows best whenplantedin sunny locations. Who is intrigued by thewillow roots, must know that thisplantit has a very extensive root system, very strong but not very deep.

If you want to set up awillow hedgeyou can choose the species with the most suitable and most resistant formpruning. In reality, all willows are resistant to pruning, the most suitable for hedge cultivation are three:

  • Swiss willow
    Typical plant of the Alps, botanically known as Salix helvetica.
  • Rosemary willow
    Salix rosmarinifolia, has leaves similar to those of rosemary and grows spontaneously only in the Ligurian territory.
  • Astatus willow
    Salix hastatait grows spontaneously in all northern regions.

Therecuttingis a technique of multiplication of the willow with high chances of success, so it is the most widespread propagation.

For thewillow bonsai cultivation starting from the seed is recommended. In reality, the spontaneous spread of willows is ensured by the seeds which are endowed with a tuft and hairs. The only drawback is that iwillow seedsthey have a limited germination capacity which, depending on the species, ranges from a few days to a few weeks. For this reason, we do not recommend buying willow seeds, it is better to collect them yourself.

When to make the willow cutting?
Spring cuttings and autumn cuttings are possible. The willow cutting can be taken both in late autumn and in early spring.

One takes onecuttingwith a length of 15 cm. At the time of cutting, use well-sharpened and disinfected scissors. Cut the branch obliquely so as to have a larger surface to develop the roots.

Fill a container with a mixture of one part of peat and one part of coarse sand. Make as many holes in the soil as there are willow cuttingsto do. The substrate of thecuttingit must always be kept moist.

Cover the container with a transparent plastic sheet and place it on a veranda or in a closed and bright place.

To increase the chances of engraftment, use on yourswillow cuttinga phytostimulating substance able to help root formation.

In addition to using a rooting product, remember to always keep the soil moistsprayingwater but without wetting the cutting. Use water at room temperature and possibly distilled.

Once your cutting has developed roots, transfer it to a pot. Therewillow cutting, until it has shown a certain vigor, it must be grown in pots. Planting is not recommended just after rooting. Before planting in the garden, wait at least a year continuing thecultivation of willow cuttings in pots.
