Apondcan give a magical look to the garden. Thereconstruction of an artificial lakeit's not complicated at all.

To give theartificial pondlook as natural as possible, it must not have an excessively regular shape and the outline must have free courses. Inbuild an artificial pondyou can make use of special pre-built tanks, ready to be buried, or you can use a shovel and spade to create asmall pond. In this article we will see both solutions in detail.

DIY garden pond, what it takes to do it

To build an artificial pond you will need:

  • a waterproof sheet
  • sheet glue
  • concrete blocks
  • bricks or stones,
  • cement and concrete mortar
  • electric pump (recommended)

To these materials you will have to add the working tools such as trowel, gloves and shovels for removing the soil and other small tools. What you will NOT need are phobics: the cloth should not be cut but folded on itself and glued. At the start with the works!

How to make a DIY pond

The first thing to do is to carry out the excavation with the walls running vertically to allow you to build the wall.

Remove from the bottom of the pondall debris, stones and other blunt elements. Rake the bottom to prevent debris from piercing the cloth. As a precaution, the bottom should be filled with an abundant layer of fine sand

If you prefer, you can create a screed with concrete blocks where the wall will rise.

Then spread the towel in the tub. Buy a cloth larger than the perimeter to be covered and make sure that it protrudes from the outline by at least 25 cm. Secure the excess sheet with glue (folding it on itself) and cover it with stones or bricks.

Remember that the cloth must not be cut but covered with stones. Cut the cloth only you bought it an excessively large cloth, in this case, the cloth should be cut at the edges of the pond: the cut must never be performed below the maximum water level. Make sure that in the corners, the sheet only makes a fold which will then be fixed with mastic (sheet glue).

To facilitate cleaning theartificial pond, at the time ofconstruction, we recommend inserting a water recycling system by installing an electric pump.

To give it a more natural look, theconstruction of an artificial lakewith different depths, for this purpose it will be necessary to dig on several levels and create an ad hoc wall, perhaps combining it with waterproof resins.

How to make a garden pond with pre-built tubs

There are many models of preformed garden pond. Prices range from 50 euros for models of just 100 cm (one meter) up to over 200 euros for models of at least 3 meters. In the photo above there is a pre-formed garden pond and the irregular shape has been enhanced by a large number of cleverly distributed stones.

To find out the prices of preformed ponds, please visit the Amazon page dedicated topre-built tanks for garden ponds. You will notice that the choice is very wide and, in general, different sizes are available for each model.

Once you have chosen the tank that you like best and, above all, that best suits your garden, all you have to do is prepare the excavation.

The excavation must be done with an extra 20 cm for each side. As a precaution, the bottom should be raked, removing all debris and filled with a generous layer of fine sand (very cheap, found in construction shops). The fine sand is used to preserve the plastic material of the tank over time. The same precaution is also required for the fabric pond.
